Aktau, city in southwest Kazakhstan

Aktau, the capital of the Mangystau region, located on the coast of the Caspian Sea in Kazakhstan, is a modern city known for its unique architecture and its strategic role in the energy industry.

Surrounded by spectacular landscapes, it offers a combination of nature, culture, and history, with impressive beaches and rock formations.

Aktau, the capital of the Mangystau region in Kazakhstan

In addition to the Caspian Sea, its markets, and its contemporary Islamic architecture, with the Imam Mosque being a great example, Aktau offers a unique opportunity to escape into breathtaking natural landscapes.

As you venture away from the city, you will discover the vast desert expanses and the imposing mountains of the Mangystau region.

🚙 Although the city of Aktau is well-connected, it's difficult to travel outside the city without knowing the area well. Between roads stretching for hundreds of kilometers and weather conditions, it's best to get in touch with a local guide, or contact us!

Must-see places around Aktau (Mangystau):

Sherkala

The legendary Sherkala Mountain, located about 50 kilometers northeast of Aktau, silently watches over the peace and serenity of the surrounding area.

With its towering cliffs and distinctive peak, Sherkala is a site steeped in mystery and legends, holding within it the secrets of centuries past.

Saura Lake

The stunning Saura Lake, located about 150 kilometers north of Aktau, is surrounded by steep cliffs with spherical shapes, offering a breathtaking natural landscape.

This unique setting creates a serene atmosphere, where the crystal-clear water reflects the surrounding rock walls.

Be sure to keep an eye out for water turtles swimming peacefully, adding a touch of tranquility to this enchanting place.

Shakpak Ata Mausoleum

The Shakpak Ata Mausoleum, located about 100 kilometers south of Aktau, is an impressive spiritual and historical site, housing the tomb of Shakpak Ata, a hermit and mystic revered by locals.

This centuries-old underground complex is carved into the rock and includes caves used as prayer spaces.

The atmosphere of the site is filled with serenity and mysticism, with walls adorned with ancient drawings and symbols.

Karagie Valley

About 100 kilometers from Aktau lies the deepest depression in Kazakhstan, located 132 meters below sea level: the Karagie Valley.

A remnant of the ancient Tethys Ocean that covered the region millions of years ago, it now contains a wide variety of minerals and salts, making it fascinating for both geologists and visitors.

Its arid, desert landscape, dotted with rock formations and steep hills, creates a unique natural setting.

Jeep and tent expeditions lasting 3 to 5 days are already planned for 2025 in the Mangystau region! Torysh

Torysh, also known as the "Valley of Balls" and located about 150 kilometers northeast of Aktau, is famous for its spherical rock formations.

These natural concretions, formed in sedimentary rock through a geological process that has intrigued scientists for over 250 years, scatter across a vast plateau.

Bozjhira

Bozjhira is a spectacular region located 150 kilometers from Aktau, known for its stunning geological formations.

This desert site is home to towering cliffs, cone-shaped hills, and rock formations in white and ochre, creating unique landscapes.
